JIM DRYDEN / ART
Set Theory
“Art is about connecting. It connects us to our past and future, to our families and community, and opens us up to possibility and opportunity.”
Drawing inspiration from mathematician Georg Cantor, this collection of images posits that in painting, the art of asking questions is more valuable than solving problems. Dryden begins with a completely abstracted background painted with random, broad strokes of color. He then superimposes a structure of sets or overlapping circular forms that contrast with the background to create a sense of order out of chaos. He engages with the practice of painting to explore a set of possibilities for defining his world and ours. His worklooks at the relationships that connect individuals and social systems while posing questions about hierarchy, separation and inclusion.
